Activity Description:
Boxing Out Basics (5 minutes): Explain the concept of boxing out: positioning your body between the offensive player and the basket. Demonstrate proper boxing out technique: feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, body angled towards the offensive player. Practice boxing out against a partner.
Rebound Drill (5 minutes): Players take turns shooting and rebounding their own misses. Focus on boxing out, jumping for the rebound, and securing the ball. Emphasize using two hands to grab the rebound.
Putback Contest (5 minutes): Divide players into pairs. One player shoots, and the other defends the putback. Encourage the defender to challenge the shooter without fouling. After a set number of attempts, switch roles.
Defensive Rebounding Scrimmage (10 minutes): Divide players into two teams and play a short scrimmage focusing on defensive rebounding and putback defense. Emphasize boxing out, communication, and contesting putback attempts.
Putback Defense Scenarios (5 minutes): Create specific putback scenarios (e.g., offensive player misses a layup, offensive player misses a jump shot). Players practice reacting to the situation, boxing out, and contesting the putback.
Cool Down (5 minutes):
Light jog around the court (2 minutes)
Static stretches (hamstring stretches, quad stretches, arm raises) (3 minutes)
One-on-One Putback Battle: Players compete in one-on-one matchups, focusing on putback defense.
Rebound and Outlet Drill: Players practice rebounding and quickly pushing the ball up the court after securing the rebound.
Defensive Rebounding Challenges: Set team or individual goals for defensive rebounds per game.
Emphasize the importance of anticipation and reacting quickly to missed shots.
Teach players to use their body effectively to box out and create space.
Encourage players to communicate with their teammates on the defensive glass.
Practice different types of putback attempts (hooks, tip-ins, follow-ups) to develop versatility.
