Short Pass Drill

Learning Outcomes

Improve accuracy in short passing.
Enhance control and technique when receiving and delivering the ball.
Develop spatial awareness and teamwork.
Build confidence in using short passes effectively in matches.

Description Of Activity

Warm-up:
Jogging and Dynamic Stretching (5 minutes):
Have players jog around the field or designated area.
Follow with dynamic stretches: leg swings, high knees, butt kicks, and arm circles.

Passing Warm-up (5 minutes):
Pair up players.
Stand about 5-10 yards apart.
Pass the ball back and forth using only the inside of the foot.
Focus on accuracy and gentle touch.

Activity Description:
Drill Setup (5 minutes):
Divide the players into small groups of 3-4.
Set up a grid of approximately 15x15 yards, depending on the number of players and skill level.
Place cones at each corner of the grid.

Short Pass Drill (15 minutes):
Basic Passing Pattern:
Players start at the corners of the grid.
The first player passes the ball to the second player at the adjacent cone.
The second player receives and passes to the third player.
Continue the pattern until the ball returns to the starting player.
Emphasize using the inside of the foot for accurate short passes.
Ensure players use their first touch to control the ball effectively.

Add Movement (10 minutes):
Have players rotate positions after each pass.
Introduce a small challenge: add a defender in the middle of the grid to put pressure on the passing team.
Players must adapt and make quicker decisions while maintaining accuracy.

Cool Down:
Duration: 5 minutes
Light Jog and Stretching:
Have players jog slowly around the field to gradually lower their heart rate.
Follow with static stretching: hamstring stretches, quadriceps stretches, calf stretches, and shoulder stretches.

Variations

Limited Touches: Restrict the number of touches each player can use (e.g., two touches maximum). This encourages quicker decision-making.
Different Pass Types: Introduce different types of passes (e.g., using the outside of the foot or one-touch passing) to diversify skills.
Obstacle Passing: Set up obstacles (cones or small hurdles) in the grid. Players must pass the ball through the gaps, adding complexity to the drill.

Coaching Tips

Focus on Technique: Ensure players use the inside of their foot for precise passes and that their body is balanced.
Encourage Communication: Players should call out to each other and make eye contact before passing.
Emphasize the First Touch: The first touch should set up the ball for an accurate pass.
Keep It Moving: Ensure players are always on the move, making the drill more game-like and dynamic.

Equipment/Material Required

Cones (for marking out the grid and corners)
Footballs (one for each group of players)
Pinnies (optional, for identifying teams in the variation with a defender)
Whistle (optional, for starting and stopping drills)
