Ball Handling Fun-Catch and Throw

Learning Outcomes

Develop hand-eye coordination.
Learn basic catching and throwing techniques.
Improve ball control.

Description Of Activity

Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Dynamic Stretching: Lead students in a brief warm-up to prepare their muscles. Include arm circles, high knees, and gentle twists.
Ball Familiarity: Have students pass the ball around in their own space, focusing on gently bouncing it off their hands to get comfortable handling it.

Main Activity (20-25 minutes):
Step 1: Pair Up (2 minutes)
Instruction: Divide students into pairs. Ensure that pairs are of similar skill levels for balanced practice.
Formation: Have students stand facing each other about 2-3 feet apart.

Step 2: Gentle Throws (5 minutes)
Instruction: Demonstrate the underarm throw technique.
Throwing Technique: Hold the ball with both hands, bend the elbows slightly, and use a smooth, controlled motion to release the ball towards the partner.
Catching Technique: Catch with both hands, keeping fingers spread out and palms facing up. Absorb the impact by bringing the ball towards the body.
Practice: Each student takes turns throwing and catching. Encourage them to focus on accuracy and control rather than speed.

Step 3: Catch and Return (5 minutes)
Instruction: After catching the ball, students should throw it back to their partner using the same underarm technique.
Practice: Continue practicing with gentle throws and catches. Provide feedback and encouragement.

Step 4: Increase Difficulty (5-7 minutes)
Distance: Gradually increase the distance between students. Start at 2-3 feet and move to 5-6 feet as confidence grows.
Speed: Encourage students to throw the ball with a bit more speed as they become more comfortable with the distance.

Step 5: Introduce Variations (5-7 minutes)
Overarm Throws: Demonstrate the overarm throw technique.
Throwing Technique: Hold the ball with one hand, bring it back behind the shoulder, and follow through with an overarm motion.
Catching Technique: Catch with both hands, but be ready for a faster throw.
Experiment with Throws: Encourage students to try different grips and throwing motions, such as sidearm or underhand variations.

Cool Down (5 minutes):
Gentle Stretching: Lead students in a cool-down routine to relax their muscles. Include stretches for the arms, shoulders, and legs.
Reflection: Gather students and discuss what they learned and enjoyed about the activity. Encourage them to share their thoughts on how they improved their catching and throwing skills.

Safety Considerations:
Ensure the playing area is clear of obstacles and has enough space for movement.
Monitor students closely, especially during moving target and obstacle course variations, to prevent accidents.
Adjust activities as needed based on the skill level and comfort of the students.

Variations

Moving Targets (5 minutes):

Instruction: Have students walk or lightly jog while catching and throwing the ball. Start with slow movements and gradually increase the pace.
Body Parts (5 minutes):

Instruction: Challenge students to catch and throw the ball using different parts of their body, such as their chest, stomach, or head. Ensure safety by monitoring closely.
Obstacle Course (optional, 5-7 minutes):

Setup: Create a simple obstacle course with cones or markers.
Instruction: Students must navigate the course while catching and throwing the ball to their partner.

Coaching Tips

Soft Hands: Remind students to keep their hands relaxed when catching to better absorb the ball’s impact.
Focus on the Ball: Encourage students to keep their eyes on the ball at all times, from release to catch.
Positive Reinforcement: Praise students for successful throws and catches to boost their confidence.
Correcting Errors: Gently correct mistakes, such as stiff arms or looking away from the ball. Demonstrate proper techniques as needed.

Equipment/Material Required

Handballs (one per pair of students)
Cones (optional, for marking distances or creating obstacle courses)
