Dribble and Chase

Learning Outcomes

Develop basic dribbling skills.
Improve coordination and ball control.
Encourage teamwork and cooperation.

Description Of Activity

Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Dynamic Stretching: Begin with stretches to prepare the body. Include arm swings, leg swings, and gentle twists to loosen up.
Ball Handling Warm-Up: Have students perform light dribbling in their own space to get comfortable with the ball. Encourage them to use both hands and change speeds.

Main Activity (20-25 minutes):
Step 1: Divide into Pairs (2 minutes)
Instruction: Pair up students. Ensure each pair has enough space to move around safely. If there is an odd number of students, form a trio or have one student join another pair for a brief time.

Step 2: Dribble and Chase (15 minutes)
Instruction:
Dribbling: One student (the dribbler) will start with the ball and dribble around an area while the other student (the chaser) tries to intercept or tag them.
Chasing: The chaser tries to get close enough to touch or tag the dribbler while the dribbler moves around the space.
Encouragement: Emphasize that the dribbler should use various dribbling techniques, including changes of direction and speed, to evade the chaser.
Rotation:
Switch Roles: After 2-3 minutes, have students switch roles so that each student has the opportunity to both dribble and chase.
Practice Time: Repeat the dribbling and chasing process, ensuring that each student has a fair amount of time in both roles.

Step 3: Add Variations (5-8 minutes)
Dribble Around Cones:
Setup: Place cones in a zigzag pattern or a circle.
Activity: Have students dribble around the cones while the chaser tries to tag them. This helps improve control and maneuvering.

Change Direction:
Instruction: Incorporate dribbling while changing direction. The dribbler should practice sharp turns and quick changes in direction to evade the chaser.

Dribble and Pass:
Setup: Pair students up again, but this time introduce passing.
Activity: While dribbling, students should pass the ball back and forth to their partner while trying to avoid being tagged by the chaser. This encourages teamwork and coordination.

Cool Down (5 minutes):
Gentle Stretching: Lead students through stretches to relax their muscles. Focus on the arms, shoulders, and legs.
Reflection: Gather students and discuss what they learned during the activity. Encourage them to share their experiences and improvements.

Safety Considerations:
Space Management: Ensure the activity area is clear of obstacles and has enough space for students to move safely.
Monitor Activity: Supervise closely to prevent collisions or accidents during the dribbling and chasing.
Adjust Difficulty: Modify the activity based on students skill levels to ensure it is challenging yet achievable for everyone.

Coaching Tips

Focus on Technique: Emphasize the importance of using both hands for dribbling and maintaining control of the ball.
Encourage Effort: Motivate students to try their best, both in dribbling and chasing. Praise effort and progress.
Provide Feedback: Offer constructive feedback to help students improve their dribbling techniques and strategies for evading or tagging.

Equipment/Material Required

Handballs (one per pair)
