Pass and Move Relay

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this activity, students will:
Demonstrate correct handball passing techniques (chest, bounce, and overarm passes).
Improve timing, accuracy, and catching skills.
Apply movement principles such as space and positioning.
Cooperate effectively with teammates during dynamic play.

Description Of Activity

Setup:
Divide class into small teams (4–6 players each).
Use cones to set up lanes or zones for each team.
Each team forms a line behind a cone. One "passing station" is set up 5–10 meters away.
One ball per team.

How to Play:
Player A starts with the ball and passes it to Player B at the station.
After passing, Player A runs to the station, and Player B runs to the back of the line.
The next person (Player C) receives from Player A (now at the station), and the relay continues.
Progressively increase difficulty: move the station farther, require different types of passes, or use movement-based challenges (e.g., jump pass, one-step pass).

Variations

Use larger, lighter balls; allow catching with two hands
Introduce chest and bounce passes; reduce ball size
Add movement after passing (pass and move); use small groups
Introduce overarm pass and fake passes; use time-based scoring
Include defenders or interception challenges

Coaching Tips

Emphasize:
W grip: Thumbs and fingers spread behind the ball.
Step into the pass, rotate the torso.
Snap wrists for power and direction.

Encourage:
Eye contact before passing.
Quick movements after the pass (“pass and move”).

Correct:
Flat-footed stance or slouched posture.
Passing too hard or soft relative to the distance.

Use praise and cues like:
“Step to your target!”
“Quick hands, quick feet!”
“Eyes up before you throw!”

Equipment/Material Required

  • Large round balls.
  • Grass or hard surface area.
  • Groups of four, with one ball per group: three players stand in a line side by side facing Player 1, who is 23 meters in front of them and holding the ball.
