Leaping Relay Race

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to effectively use their leaping skills in a competitive relay setting.
Students will demonstrate improved teamwork and sportsmanship during the activity.

Description Of Activity

Warm-Up (10 minutes):
Leg Swings (1.5 minutes): Students stand near a wall or support. Swing one leg forward and backward, keeping the movements smooth and controlled. Switch legs after 45 seconds. This prepares the hips and legs for dynamic activities.
Arm Circles (1.5 minutes): Extend arms out to the sides. Make small circles, gradually increasing in size. After 45 seconds, switch direction. This warms up the shoulders and arms.
High Knees (2 minutes): Jog in place, bringing knees up towards the chest. Aim for a brisk pace to elevate the heart rate and engage the core and leg muscles.
Jumping Rope (5 minutes):Instructions: Students use a jump rope to practice coordination and rhythm. Demonstrate the proper technique: hold the handles, swing the rope over the head, and jump with feet together. Emphasize maintaining a steady rhythm and minimal impact on the ground.

Divide the Class into Teams (2 minutes):
Teams: Form teams of 4-6 students, depending on class size and available equipment. Try to balance teams in terms of skill levels to ensure a fair competition.

Set Up the Relay Course (5 minutes):
Course Design: Create a relay course with a series of leaping obstacles. Use cones, markers, or other equipment to define the course. Heres a sample setup:
Box Jumps: Set up a row of boxes for students to leap onto and off.
Hurdles: Position hurdles for students to hop over.
Cone Weaving: Arrange cones in a zigzag pattern for weaving.
Bean Bag Collection: Place bean bags at a designated spot. Students must leap to collect and return them to their teams area.
Course Layout: Ensure the obstacles are spaced appropriately to allow smooth transitions and safe landings.

Demonstration and Explanation (5 minutes):
Walkthrough: Demonstrate how to navigate the course, focusing on technique for each leaping movement. Explain how each team member will perform a different leaping task.
Rules: Outline the rules:
Each team member must complete their designated obstacle before tagging the next teammate.
The team that completes the course first, with all members performing their tasks correctly, wins.
Emphasize safety, proper technique, and adherence to the rules.

Relay Race (8 minutes):
Execution: Teams take turns running the relay course. Each member completes their assigned leaping obstacle, tags the next teammate, and so on until all members have finished.
Timing: Use a stopwatch or timer to track each team's completion time. Announce the winner based on who finishes the course first.
Discussion: After the race, discuss the results and performance with the students. Highlight teamwork, strategy, and any areas for improvement.

Cool Down (5 minutes):
Calf Stretches (1 minute): Students place one foot on a raised surface and lean forward gently to stretch the calf muscle. Switch legs after 30 seconds.
Hamstring Stretches (1 minute): Students sit on the ground with legs extended. Reach towards their toes, holding the stretch for 30 seconds per leg.
Quadriceps Stretches (1 minute): Students stand and pull one foot towards their buttocks, holding for 30 seconds per leg.

Deep Breathing Exercises (2 minutes):
Instructions: Guide students through deep breathing exercises. Instruct them to inhale deeply through the nose, hold the breath for a few seconds, and exhale slowly through the mouth. This helps lower the heart rate and promotes relaxation.

Variations

Leaping Scavenger Hunt: Incorporate a scavenger hunt element into the relay race. Students must leap to various stations to collect items or solve clues before continuing the relay.
Objective: Adds an element of exploration and problem-solving to the leaping relay.
Leaping Obstacle Course Game: Create a game version of the relay where teams must complete additional challenges at each obstacle, such as performing specific leaping techniques or answering trivia questions related to physical activity.
Objective: Increases the complexity and fun of the relay by combining leaping with cognitive challenges.

Coaching Tips

Teamwork and Sportsmanship: Foster an environment of cooperation and positive encouragement. Remind students to cheer for their teammates and display good sportsmanship, regardless of the outcome.
Rule Adherence: Ensure students understand and follow the relay race rules. Address any issues with fairness and encourage adherence to safety practices.
Positive Feedback: Offer constructive feedback and praise to all teams. Acknowledge individual efforts and improvements to motivate students.

Equipment/Material Required

Cones: For marking the course and setting up weaving sections.
Markers: To indicate specific stations or boundaries.
Boxes: For box jumps.
Hurdles: For hopping over.
