Galloping with Props

Learning Outcomes

Gross Motor Skills: Children will enhance their large muscle movements by practicing galloping, an essential locomotor skill.
Coordination: The activity will improve hand-eye coordination as children manage props while moving.
Creativity: Children will express themselves creatively through movement and the imaginative use of various props.

Description Of Activity

In this dynamic and engaging activity, children will gallop while holding different props such as scarves, beanbags, and balloons. This session focuses on physical activity, coordination, and imaginative play. As they gallop, children will learn to balance and adapt their movements based on the props they are using, enhancing both their physical and creative skills.

Warm-Up (5-10 minutes):
Dynamic Stretching: Start with a series of dynamic stretches to prepare their bodies. Include: Arm circles, Leg swings, High knees

Galloping Introduction:
Teach children the basic galloping motion. Demonstrate and practice together for a few minutes, focusing on using the lead foot and following foot correctly.

Introduce Props (5 minutes):
Distribute the props (scarves, beanbags, balloons) and explain their uses.
Demonstrate how to hold each prop securely:
Scarves: Hold the ends loosely to allow for fluttering.
Beanbags: Balance them on a hand or on their head.
Balloons: Hold by the string or gently toss them while galloping.

Galloping Practice (10-15 minutes):
Create a designated area for children to practice galloping with their props.
Use cones or markers to set up a course where children can gallop from one point to another.
Monitor and provide guidance, encouraging children to maintain balance and control while moving.

Guided Galloping (10-15 minutes):
Different Types of Props: Allow children to switch props after a few minutes to explore how each one changes their movement.
Pairs or Groups: Form pairs or small groups and have them gallop side by side, promoting teamwork.
Rhythm and Music: Play an upbeat song and have children gallop to the rhythm, encouraging them to change speed and style based on the music.

Cool Down (5-10 minutes):
Gather the children in a circle for a cool-down session.
Lead them through gentle stretching exercises such as reaching for the sky and bending down to touch their toes.
Invite children to share their favorite parts of the activity and any new moves they created.

Variations

Different Types of Props: Introduce additional props like colorful ribbons or lightweight hoops for varied movement experiences.
Pairs or Groups: Promote social interaction by having children form a train or hold hands while galloping.
Obstacle Course: Design a fun obstacle course with cones, where children must navigate while galloping, integrating creative moves with their props at designated spots.

Coaching Tips

Safety First: Remind children to hold props securely and watch their surroundings to avoid collisions.
Balance and Posture: Encourage maintaining an upright posture, with heads up for better balance.
Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate their efforts, creativity, and unique ways of using the props.
Engagement: Stay enthusiastic and actively participate to keep the energy high and motivate the children.

Equipment/Material Required
