Double Dutch-Entering

Learning Outcomes

Read and match the rhythm of two turning ropes.

Enter safely and smoothly into Double Dutch ropes.

Maintain balance, coordination, and quick foot movement during entry.

Build confidence in rope timing and team communication.

Description Of Activity

This drill focuses ONLY on how to enter the ropes safely and correctly before skipping.

Steps:

Turners stand opposite each other, turning two ropes in alternating directions.

The jumper stands at one side of the ropes and watches the pattern:

Rope 1 hits the ground

Rope 2 hits the ground

Repeat (steady rhythm)

The jumper rocks forward and backward on their feet to feel the rhythm.

When the front rope lifts upward, the jumper steps in quickly, landing with light, small hops.

After entering, the jumper maintains skipping or jumps out after 23 jumps.

Rotate roles (jumper turners).

Variations

1. Shadow Entry (No Rope yet)

Students practice stepping in and hopping using imaginary ropes.

Helps beginners feel confident before facing the ropes.

2. One-Rope Entry

Use only one turning rope while the second remains still.

Students enter and jump, then progress to full Double Dutch.

3. Slow Turn Entry

Turners slow the speed for easy timing.

Once consistent, gradually increase speed.

4. Running Start Entry

Jumper jogs toward the rope and enters in motion for smoother timing.

5. Partner Entry Challenge

Two students enter together using synchronized timing.

Coaching Tips

Tell students to “watch the rope, not the feet.”

Keep knees soft and stay light on the toes.

Turners must keep steady, even rhythm.

Avoid rushing—timing matters more than speed.

Equipment/Material Required
