Forehand Groundstroke Fundamentals

Learning Outcomes

Develop a basic understanding of the forehand grip.
Learn the correct stance and ready position.
Practice the basic swing motion of a forehand groundstroke.

Description Of Activity

  1. Warm-up: Light jogging, arm circles, leg swings, and racket swings.
  2. Grip and Stance: Demonstrate the continental grip and a ready position with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and racket held at waist level.
  3. Swing Motion: Break down the swing into three parts: backswing, forward swing, and follow-through. Practice slow-motion swings without a ball.
  4. Ball Contact: Introduce ball contact using a low-bounce feed. Focus on making contact in front of the body and brushing the ball.
  5. Drills:
    • Wall Drill: Practice hitting the ball against a wall, focusing on technique and ball contact.
    • Partner Feed: Have a partner feed balls at a slow pace, allowing players to focus on their swing.

Variations

Increase the pace of the feed to challenge players' reaction time.
Add spin to the ball to encourage players to adjust their swing.
Introduce cross-court and down-the-line shots.

Coaching Tips

Emphasize the importance of a relaxed grip.
Encourage players to step into the shot with their front foot.
Remind players to keep their head still and eyes on the ball.
