Developing a Consistent Serve

Learning Outcomes

Description Of Activity

  • Warm-up: Light jogging, arm circles, leg swings, and racket swings.
  • Grip and Stance: Demonstrate the continental grip and a balanced stance, with feet shoulder-width apart and weight on the back foot.
  • Motion: Break down the serve into three phases: the toss, the backswing, and the forward swing. Practice slow-motion serves without a ball.
  • Ball Contact: Introduce ball contact, focusing on hitting the sweet spot of the racket.
  • Drills:
    • Toss and Hit: Practice tossing the ball and hitting it without any specific target.
    • Target Practice: Set up targets on the court and aim to hit the ball into them.
    • Serve and Volley: Practice serving and immediately moving to the net to volley the return.

Variations

Introduce different types of serves, such as flat serves, topspin serves, and slice serves.
Practice serving from different positions on the baseline.
Increase the speed of the serve to challenge players' reaction time.

Coaching Tips

Encourage a high toss to generate power and spin.
