Activity
Improve dribbling, agility, and quick decision-making under pressure.
Enhance players’ ability to use ball handling skills to evade defenders.
Foster teamwork and communication among players.
Warm-Up
Jogging with Dribble (2 minutes): Players jog around the court while dribbling the ball. Focus on controlled dribbles and keeping the head up.
Hand-eye Coordination Drills (2 minutes): Players dribble in place, alternating hands every few seconds. Have players switch between right hand, left hand, and crossovers.
Side-to-Side Dribbles (2 minutes): Players dribble with one hand while moving side to side. Focus on low, controlled dribbling and fast lateral movement.
Ball Slaps (1 minute): Players practice slapping the basketball with both hands while the ball is in motion to improve hand coordination.
2. Dribble Tag Introduction (5 minutes)
Purpose: Briefly explain the rules and objectives of the Dribble Tag game.
One or two players are "it" (defenders).
All other players must dribble around the area without being tagged.
If a player is tagged, they become "it."
Players can use fakes, crossovers, and quick changes of direction to evade the tagger.
Set boundaries (using cones) to keep the game contained within a certain area.
Note: Emphasize that the goal is to improve dribbling and footwork, not just tagging others.
3. Dribble Tag Round 1 (10-15 minutes)
Purpose: Start the first round of Dribble Tag to allow players to practice real-time dribbling under pressure.
Start with 2 "It" players: Choose 2 players to be "it" and the rest of the group will attempt to avoid being tagged.
Game begins: The it players chase down the other players, trying to tag them. When a player is tagged, they become it.
Dribbling focus: Encourage players to use quick dribbles, change directions, and use their body to shield the ball.
Time limit: Set a 3-4 minute time limit for each round to keep it intense and fast-paced.
4. Skill Development Focus (5-10 minutes)
Purpose: Focus on specific dribbling skills to enhance players' ability to evade taggers in the next round.
Crossover Dribbling: Players partner up and practice quick crossover dribbles while standing still and then moving.
Change of Pace: Have players dribble in a straight line, alternating between slow dribbles and explosive bursts of speed. The goal is to mimic how a player can accelerate when needed to break away from a defender.
Shielding the Ball: Players practice shielding the ball using their bodies, keeping the ball out of reach from a defender. Focus on good posture and dribbling with the non-dominant hand while protecting the ball with the body.
5. Dribble Tag Round 2 (10-15 minutes)
Purpose: Play another round of Dribble Tag where players implement the skills practiced in the previous section.
Rotate the "It" players: Pick new players to be "it" for the second round.
Focus on skills: Encourage players to use crossovers, quick changes of direction, and shielding techniques to avoid getting tagged.
Add a time pressure element: Set a timer for 3-4 minutes and challenge players to evade being tagged for the entire duration.
Teamwork focus (optional): If playing with larger groups, encourage players to communicate and help teammates by distracting the taggers.
6. Cool Down & Reflection (5 minutes)
Purpose: Stretch and reflect on the lesson, discuss what went well, and areas for improvement.
Cool Down Activities:
Static Stretching (2 minutes): Focus on stretches for the legs, hips, and wrists to help with flexibility and reduce soreness.
Player Reflection (3 minutes): Gather players and ask them to reflect on the following:
What techniques worked well to avoid being tagged?
What skills do they need to work on to improve their dribbling?
What strategies helped them succeed or fail during the game?
Encourage players to give each other feedback in a positive, supportive manner.
