Dribbling Ball Control

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to dribble a basketball with control.

Students will learn to keep their eyes up while dribbling.

Students will develop hand-eye coordination.

Students will be able to change hands while dribbling.

Students will learn to move while dribbling.

Description Of Activity

Students start in a designated area with their basketball.

They practice dribbling the ball in one spot, focusing on using their fingertips and keeping the ball below their waist.

Encourage them to say "bounce" each time the ball hits the ground.

Variations

Dribble with their dominant hand only.

Dribble with their non-dominant hand only.

Alternate hands with each bounce (one bounce right hand, one bounce left hand).

Dribble high (waist level), medium (knee level), and low (ankle level) on command.

Add a fun element by playing music and having them dribble to the beat. When the music stops, they freeze their dribble.

Coaching Tips

Emphasize using fingertips, not palms.

Ensure students bend their knees slightly for better control.

Remind them to keep their eyes up, not on the ball.  Have them look at you or a designated spot.

Equipment/Material Required

Basketballs (smaller size recommended for younger students)

Cones or markers

Optional: Music
