Learning Outcomes
Learn to set the ball accurately to various zones on the court.
Improve decision-making and timing for setting in different court areas.
Enhance communication between setters and hitters for better court coordination.
Description Of Activity
- The coach divides the court into several zones, typically three main areas: the outside hitter zone, middle hitter zone, and right-side hitter zone.
- Players (setters) will practice setting to specific zones in each drill.
- The coach will call out which zone the setter should aim for, and the setter will adjust their set based on the location of the hitter. The players must try to hit the target areas with precision.
- Target Zones:
- Zone 1: Outside hitter (left side of the court)
- Zone 2: Middle hitter (center of the court)
- Zone 3: Right-side hitter (right side of the court)
- The activity is performed with the setter focused on placing the ball in a specific spot while the hitter attempts to spike or attack the ball.
Variations
- Dynamic Set: Increase the difficulty by adding a moving setter. Setters must run to different spots before setting the ball to simulate real-game movement.
- One Touch: Setters must practice setting to each zone using one hand or a quick release for added speed and control.
- Blocker Simulation: Add blockers to the drill to simulate real game conditions where the setter needs to adjust to the presence of blockers. Setters must aim for different zones based on where the blockers are positioned.
- Targeted Zones: Place cones or markers in each zone to give visual targets for accuracy. This will help setters focus on precision.
Coaching Tips
- Hand Placement: Emphasize proper hand positioning, with fingers spread wide to form the "triangle" shape. The setter should use a controlled, gentle push to release the ball.
- Set Height: Adjust the height of the set based on the zone:
- Outside hitter (Zone 1): Higher, arching sets.
- Middle hitter (Zone 2): A quick, fast set.
- Right-side hitter (Zone 3): Slightly higher but faster than the outside hitter's set.
- Footwork: Remind players to adjust their footwork as needed to ensure they are in a strong, balanced position to set accurately.
- Timing: Stress the importance of timing with the hitter's approach. The setter should release the ball when the hitter is in their optimal position for attacking.
