Activity
Players will learn proper footwork (approach and jump), arm swing technique, and follow-through for effective spiking.
Players will develop the ability to time their spike with the set, improving hand-eye coordination and rhythm.
Players will practice jumping and hitting with correct posture, improving balance and control in the air.
Beginners will be introduced to aiming their spike to specific zones on the opponent’s court.
By repeating successful spiking movements, players will build confidence and a positive attacking mindset.
This drill focuses on the correct technique for the spiking approach. The drill is designed to improve players' timing, footwork, and spike power.
The coach demonstrates the correct 3-step or 4-step approach, which leads into the jump for the spike.
Players will practice their approach, aiming to generate maximum speed and power.
The coach should explain the following steps:
First Step: Start by facing the net and taking a small step backward with the non-dominant foot.
Second Step: Take a larger step forward with the dominant foot while shifting weight to prepare for the jump.
Third Step: A quick, explosive step with the non-dominant foot to set up the jump.
Jump: The player should explode upwards, using their arms for momentum, and aim to make contact with the ball at the highest point of their jump.
Players will practice this approach several times without a ball first to get comfortable with the footwork.
Once they feel confident, they will practice the full approach and jump while a coach or teammate sets the ball for them to spike.
Without Ball: Players can first practice the approach and jump without worrying about hitting the ball. This builds muscle memory for the footwork and timing.
With Setters: Setters can feed balls to the players at varying heights and speeds to simulate real game situations. Players should adjust their approach based on the type of set they receive.
Blocker Simulation: Introduce blockers (or players pretending to block) to practice hitting over a block. This will help players learn to aim for open spots on the court or hit around the blockers.
Speed Challenge: Have players perform the spike approach as quickly as possible while maintaining proper form. This challenges their agility and timing under pressure.
Footwork: Ensure players maintain proper foot placement during the approach. The first few steps should be quick and deliberate to gain momentum, with the last step being a powerful push-off to jump.
Jump: Focus on using the arms to generate height. Players should swing their arms up as they jump, leading with their elbows and hands.
Timing: Remind players to time their jump for when the ball is at the highest point for hitting. Encourage them to not jump too early or too late.
Body Position: Keep the body upright and focused on the ball. Players should aim to hit the ball with an open hand, using the palm and fingers for maximum power.
