Description Of Activity

  • Set up the course: Arrange various obstacles in a line or circuit. This could include cones to weave through, hoops to jump in and out of, and balance beams to walk across.
  • Divide the class into two teams: Split the children into two groups to encourage friendly competition and teamwork.
  • The first child from each team starts the course: They must navigate through each obstacle in the course. Ensure they complete each task before moving to the next.
  • Tag the next team member: Once the first child finishes the course, they tag the next child on their team, who will continue the relay by completing the same obstacles.
  • Race to the finish: The first team to have all its members complete the course wins the relay race.

Variations

  • Change the layout of the course: Rearrange the obstacles for each round to keep the activity exciting and challenging.
  • Add or remove obstacles: Introduce new types of obstacles, such as tunnels to crawl through, or take some out for easier courses.
  • Incorporate different motor skills: Include crawling under low ropes, jumping over objects, or climbing up a soft incline to encourage a wider range of physical abilities.

Coaching Tips

  • Adjust the difficulty of the course: Based on the children's age and skill level, modify the complexity of the obstacles. For younger children, keep the course simple with larger obstacles, while for older children, make it more challenging with narrower spaces or higher balance beams.
  • Encourage teamwork: Remind children to cheer on and encourage their teammates. This fosters a positive, supportive environment.
  • Focus on safety: Always ensure that the obstacles are set up safely to avoid accidents. Teach children how to properly approach each challenge, such as jumping carefully or balancing steadily.
