Falling Forwards at Speed

Learning Outcomes

Understand how forward body lean creates natural acceleration.

Improve start mechanics for running/walking at speed.

Develop balance, posture, and controlled momentum.

Enhance reaction time and quick step turnover.

Description Of Activity

Students stand tall with feet hip-width apart.

Teacher says Lean! students gently fall forward from the ankles, keeping the body straight.

When they feel like they will fall, they quickly step forward into a run or fast walk to catch themselves.

Continue running or fast walking for 1015 meters with a steady forward lean and fast steps.

Walk back and repeat.

Variations

Walking Catch: Students fall forward and “catch” themselves with fast walking steps (beginner).

Running Acceleration: Fall forward into a sprint for 15–20 meters.

Partner Signal: Partner taps the shoulder → student leans and accelerates on cue.

Cone Targets: Students must reach a target cone using controlled acceleration.

Speed Build: Start slow → medium → full-speed acceleration.

Coaching Tips

“Lean from the ankles, not the waist.”

“Let your body pull you forward.”

“Quick, light steps when you catch your fall.”

“Keep head up and chest open.”

Equipment/Material Required

Cones to mark start and distance

Whistle or verbal cues

Space for 10–20 meter acceleration runs
