Front and Back Court Movement Drill

Learning Outcomes

Improve footwork efficiency between front (net) and back (baseline) areas.
Develop speed, agility, and endurance for longer rallies.
Enhance anticipation and recovery to the base position.
Build confidence in covering the whole court effectively.

Description Of Activity

One player (the worker) starts at the base position (center of the court).
Coach/feeder (or partner) stands on the opposite side with a racket and shuttle supply.

Execution:
The feeder alternates shuttles between front court (net area) and back court (deep clears or lifts).

The worker must:
Lunge forward with correct footwork to play a net shot/drop return.

Quickly recover to base.
Move back with chasse or scissor-kick footwork to hit an overhead clear/smash/drop.
Drill continues for 6–10 shuttles in a sequence.

Rotation:
Switch roles after each round (1–2 minutes per turn).
Repeat 3–5 sets depending on endurance goals.

Variations

Beginner: Use slower feeds, fewer shuttles (focus on correct movement).
Intermediate: Faster feeds, 8–12 shuttles per rally, add recovery to base after every shot.
Advanced: Randomize feeds (front or back unpredictably), add smashes at the back court.
Conditioning Mode: Continuous movement for 30–60 seconds without rally-ending shots.

Coaching Tips

Stress low stance and quick first step.
Ensure proper lunging technique at the net (knee bent, racket arm extended).
At the back court, use scissor jump or kick-through for power and quick recovery.
Encourage returning to base position after every shot.
Remind players to stay light on their feet, not flat-footed.

Equipment/Material Required

Badminton court with net.
Rackets and shuttlecocks.
Cones (optional, to mark footwork zones).
