Whack attack

Learning Outcomes

Improve spiking/attacking technique and timing.
Develop approach footwork and arm swing mechanics.
Build confidence in hitting against a block or open space.
Encourage fun competition in a high-energy environment.

Description Of Activity

Divide players into two groups: attackers and tossers/setters.
Attackers line up outside the 3-meter line (spiking zone).
Coach or teammate stands near the net to toss or set balls.

Execution:
The tosser/coach tosses the ball high near the net.
The attacker performs a 3-step or 4-step approach (e.g., left-right-left for right-handed hitters).
Player jumps, swings arm back, and spikes (“whacks”) the ball over the net.
After hitting, attacker collects ball and joins the back of the line.

Rotation:
Continue rapid-fire style: one after the other to keep rhythm and intensity.
Switch roles (attackers become tossers/setters) after a few minutes.

Variations

Target Zones: Place cones on the opposite court—players aim to spike into specific zones.
Block Challenge: Add blockers at the net (hands up) for attackers to hit around.
Team Competition: Two teams take turns; whichever team scores more clean spikes wins.
Power vs. Placement: Alternate between hitting hard and hitting controlled shots.
Rapid Fire: Coach feeds multiple balls quickly; attacker hits 3–5 in a row before rotating.

Coaching Tips

Teach proper approach footwork (explosive last two steps).
Emphasize jump timing—hit at peak of the jump.
Contact point should be high and in front of hitting shoulder.
Encourage full arm swing and wrist snap for downward trajectory.
Remind players to land safely on both feet.

Equipment/Material Required

Volleyballs (several to keep drill moving).
Net and court.
Cones/markers for target zones (optional).
