Baton Exchange Drill

Learning Outcomes

To understand the rules and zones for baton exchange.
To execute efficient non-visual (blind) and visual exchanges.
To will develop timing and coordination for smooth baton transfers.

Description Of Activity

Baton Grip & Hand Position:
Practice holding the baton securely.
Receiver: Hand open, palm up, thumb pointing down, forming a "V" shape with index finger and thumb.
Giver: Hold the baton securely at one end.

Non-Visual Exchange (Zone Practice):
Set up a 20-meter exchange zone (indicated by cones).
Receiver: Starts from a standing or three-point start, looking forward.
Giver: Runs behind the receiver, calling "Hand!" or "Stick!" when ready to pass.
The receiver extends their arm back, and the giver places the baton firmly into the receiver's hand.
Focus on maintaining speed through the exchange.

Timing Drills (Marking):
Determine a "check mark" or "go mark" for the receiver: a specific distance behind the exchange zone where the receiver starts running when the giver hits that mark.
Experiment with different check marks to find the optimal timing for a smooth, fast exchange without breaking stride.

Visual Exchange (for 4x400m, etc.):
Receiver looks back at the giver.
Giver runs up to the receiver, and they exchange the baton while both are moving.
More common in longer relays where speed isn't as critical in the exchange zone.

Full Relay Practice:
Run full relay legs with exchanges, focusing on seamless transitions and maintaining speed.

Equipment/Material Required

Relay batons (1 per group)
Cones or markers (for exchange zones and check marks)
Open track or field space
