Standing Broad Jump with Arm Swing

Learning Outcomes

Athletes will understand the role of arm swing in generating lift and maintaining balance during flight.
Athletes will practice the "hang" or "hitch-kick" position in a controlled environment.

Description Of Activity

Setup: Stand at the edge of a sand pit or soft mat.
Execution: From a standing position, athletes perform a broad jump, focusing on a powerful arm swing upwards and forwards as they leave the ground. In the air, they should attempt to hold a "hang" position (knees slightly bent, body upright) or a "hitch-kick" (cycling legs) before preparing for landing.
Focus: The emphasis is on the arm action and body position in the air, not necessarily distance. Encourage a full range of motion with the arms.

Variations

Perform the drill with a short one-step approach.
Have athletes focus specifically on the "hitch-kick" motion, cycling their legs in the air.

Equipment/Material Required

Sand pit or soft landing mat.
