Side Block

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
Identify and differentiate between various types of blocks (e.g., high block, low block, side block).
Demonstrate proper stance and body positioning during blocking.
Perform side block and high block with correct form and technique.
React effectively to incoming attacks using blocks in a controlled environment.
Understand the importance of timing, distance, and energy control when executing blocks.

Description Of Activity

Warm-up (10 minutes)
Begin with dynamic stretches and joint mobility exercises to warm up the body.
Perform light aerobic activity such as jogging or jumping jacks to raise heart rate.

Introduction to Blocking (5 minutes)
Brief explanation of why blocking is crucial in martial artsdefensive posture, controlling an opponent's attack, creating opportunities for counterattacks.
Discuss the concept of "blocking zones" (e.g., high, middle, low) and the importance of targeting specific areas of the body.

Technique Side Block (or "Inside Block")
Demonstrate the correct form for a side block. Focus on:
Foot placement (back foot perpendicular to the front foot)
Hand position (block with the forearm, and elbow not too wide)
Angle and distance (blocking from the side with a slight rotation of the torso)
Practice side block in the air (shadow blocking).

Drill:
Partner up students. One student acts as an attacker, while the other practices blocking.
Practice block against a jab or punch coming from the side.

Progressive Blocking
Combination Drill: Perform a series of attacks and blocks. For example, the attacker throws a jab or strike, and the defender responds with a side block. Alternate roles between students.
Work on the fluid transition between the block and follow-up techniques (counter-attacks or repositioning).

Solo Practice
Students perform the side block, high block, and other defensive movements in a combination sequence without a partner.
