Upper Block

Learning Outcomes

Identify and understand the purpose of the upper block in martial arts (defense against overhead strikes).
Demonstrate proper technique for the upper block, including hand positioning, body alignment, and stance.
Perform an upper block with correct timing and control, both in solo and partner drills.
Apply the upper block in practical scenarios, such as defending against strikes from above or blocking high attacks.
Enhance awareness of body posture, footwork, and energy control when executing the block.

Description Of Activity

Warm-up - Start with joint rotations (neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles).
Light cardio (jogging in place or jumping jacks) for 3-5 minutes to increase heart rate and loosen muscles.
Dynamic stretches, particularly focusing on the shoulders, wrists, and hips to prepare for the upper block movement.

Introduction to Upper Block
Briefly explain the concept of the upper block: A defensive move to protect the head and upper body from downward strikes (like attacks with a sword, club, or hammer).
Discuss its importance in martial arts: it creates a shield using the forearms and helps maintain balance while setting up counterattacks.
Form and Structure:
Stance: Start in a basic stance (horse stance or front stance) for stability.
Hand Position: One hand is placed in a fist, while the other is open and above the head, ready to block the attack. The fist should be close to the body while the open hand forms the upper block, pushing upward with the palm facing outward.
Movement: The upper block involves lifting both hands in a sharp motion while keeping the elbows slightly bent and avoiding locking them out. Keep the arms above the head in a protective position.
Body Rotation: Practice slight torso rotation for added power while maintaining a strong, centered stance.

Key Points:
The upper block should be executed quickly and with precision.
Avoid raising the hands too high or too low; the goal is to create a strong "shield" just above the head.
Engage the core muscles for stability and strength during the block.

Partner Drill
Drill 1: One partner performs a downward strike (light tap) while the other practices the upper block. The goal is for the blocker to focus on timing and positioning.
Drill 2: After a few repetitions, add light follow-up movements after the block (e.g., counterattack or shifting positions). The person performing the block should aim to seamlessly transition from defense to offense.

Solo Practice
Have students practice upper blocks in the air, visualizing an overhead attack. Focus on smooth execution and maintaining proper form.
Work on flowing between multiple upper blocks without hesitation, as if defending against multiple attacks.

Application and Timing
Scenario Training: Using a partner or instructor, simulate different attacks from above (such as downward strikes or an overhead club). The student should practice timing their upper block effectively.
Combo Practice: Incorporate the upper block as part of a combination, such as upper block followed by a punch or kick to an opponents head or torso.

Cool Down & Reflection
Perform gentle stretches, focusing on the arms, shoulders, and wrists.
Discuss the importance of the upper block in defending against high-level attacks. Ask students to reflect on their experiences: What felt challenging? How can the block be improved with more practice?

Safety Considerations:
Ensure proper spacing during partner drills to avoid accidental injuries.
Remind students to block with controlavoid hitting too hard during the blocking drills.
Be cautious of wrist positioning; encourage students to keep their wrists straight to avoid injury.
