Fundamental Stance & Shooting Action

Learning Outcomes

Develop correct basketball stance (balance, stability).
Learn proper hand placement and shooting form.
Build muscle memory for consistent shooting technique.
Improve confidence in stationary and progressive shooting.

Description Of Activity

Part 1: Fundamental Stance (Without Ball)
Players line up facing the coach, no ball.
Coach demonstrates correct stance:
Feet shoulder-width apart.
Knees slightly bent.
Weight on the balls of the feet.
Back straight, eyes forward, hands ready.
Players mimic stance, holding 510 seconds at a time.
Add quick movements (slide left, right, forward, backward) while staying in stance.

Part 2: Shooting Action (With Ball)
Each player with a ball, standing 46 feet from the basket.
Coach explains B.E.E.F. technique:
Balance (feet shoulder-width).
Elbow (under the ball, pointing at hoop).
Eyes (focused on target).
Follow-through (snap wrist, fingers point to basket).
Players practice form shooting:
Hold the ball with shooting hand under, guide hand on side.
Bend knees, extend legs, release with wrist snap.
Hold follow-through until ball hits target.
Begin with close-range shots (no jump), progress to jump shots.

Variations

Wall Shooting: Practice form by shooting against a wall, focusing on arc and follow-through.
One-Hand Shooting: Remove guide hand to improve strength and balance of shooting hand.
Spot Shooting: Place cones around the key; players shoot from each spot.
Pressure Drill: Add defenders with light pressure after players master technique.

Coaching Tips

Keep shooting elbow aligned under the ball.
Guide hand should not push, only stabilize.
Encourage soft release and arc, not flat shots.
Land balanced after jump shot.
Repetition is key—quality over speed.

Equipment/Material Required

Basketballs (1 per player).
