Learning Outcomes
- Throwing at a moving target
- Teamwork and spatial awareness
Description Of Activity
- Mark a large square playing area on a hard, flat surface.
- Place the large ball in the centre of the square.
- Create goal lines on each side of the square.
- Divide students into four teams (approximately five players per team).
- Each team stands behind one side of the square with their small balls.
- On the teachers signal, teams throw small balls at the large ball.
- The aim is to drive the large ball across another teams goal line.
- Players must stay behind their own line when throwing.
- Players may enter the square to safely retrieve balls, then return behind their line to throw again.
- The game continues for a set time or until a goal is scored.
Variations
- Change the set-up: Play with two teams standing behind parallel lines instead of a square.
- Use different-sized balls to adjust difficulty.
- Limit the number of balls per team.
Coaching Tips
- Pointing at the target with the non-throwing hand
- Full arm action when throwing
- Follow-through towards the target
- Teams communicating and working together
- What type of throw works best to hit a moving ball?
- How can your team work together to move the ball across an opponent’s line?
- What strategies can you use to defend your goal line?
Equipment/Material Required
- Small balls (3–4 per team)
- 1 large ball (Swiss ball)
- Cones/markers to create boundaries
