Description Of Activity

Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Play upbeat music (optional) and encourage children to move around freely with light jumping jacks, arm circles, leg swings, and animal walks (pretending to be animals that throw things).

Introduction (5 minutes):
Gather the children and introduce the beanbags as fun friends who love to fly towards targets.
Show them the targets you've created and explain that they will be playing different throwing games to hit the targets.

Throwing Activities (20-25 minutes):
This section is divided into age-appropriate activities:

Underhand Toss:
Demonstrate a basic underhand toss with a beanbag, focusing on keeping elbows bent and releasing the beanbag with a gentle push.
Place large targets (decorated with simple shapes or faces) on the ground at a close distance.
Have children practice tossing the beanbag toward the targets, encouraging them to focus on throwing with a gentle motion.

Underhand Throw:
Review the underhand toss technique, reminding children to keep their feet shoulder-width apart and step forward with the opposite foot as they throw.
Place targets at varying distances on the ground or attached to low walls/fences.
Have children practice throwing the beanbag to hit the targets, introducing aiming and distance control.

Overarm Throw:
Demonstrate a basic overarm throw with a beanbag, focusing on the throwing motion with a wind-up and release at the top of the arc.
Hang targets at different heights on walls or fences.
Have children practice overarm throws to hit the targets, challenging their throwing accuracy and control.
Variation: Introduce targets with smaller points for a scoring element, encouraging precision throwing.

Cool-Down (5 minutes):
Play calming music and encourage children to walk around, holding their beanbags gently. This allows them to cool down and wind down after the activity.

Additional Tips:
Get the children involved in creating the targets by letting them decorate the construction paper or cardboard beforehand.
Use brightly colored beanbags to capture children's attention.
Consider incorporating beanbags of different weights as children progress in their throwing skills.
Encourage children to share their ideas and creative ways of throwing.

Variations

  • Throwing Relay Race: Divide students into teams and have them throw beanbags to hit a target at a designated point and back, relaying the throwing action to the next teammate. This promotes teamwork and friendly competition.
  • Beanbag Bowling (Optional): Set up several targets like bowling pins using empty plastic bottles filled with sand or rice. Students take turns throwing beanbags to knock down the targets.
  • Partner Toss: Divide students into pairs and have them stand a certain distance apart. One student throws the beanbag while the other tries to catch it. They can then switch roles. This promotes throwing and catching coordination.

Coaching Tips

  • Focus on fun and participation, not perfection.
  • Modify activities based on the age and skill level of the children.
  • Offer positive reinforcement and celebrate each child's progress.
  • Ensure enough space for throwing without hitting others or objects.

Equipment/Material Required

  • Beanbags (different sizes and weights for different age groups)
  • Colored construction paper or cardboard (to create targets)
  • Markers, crayons, or paint (to decorate targets)
  • Tape (to secure targets)
  • Open space large enough for children to move comfortably
  • Handball
