Learning Outcomes
Understand about Latitudes and Longitudes, Heat Zones of the earth and the relationship between Time and Longitude
Description Of Activity
Make marking on the ground in form of a Globe (as shown in diagram).
Divide a class into 2 teams. Depending upon the no. of players, you can increase the no. of points where they can stand (0, 30, 60, 90 OR 0,15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90 OR 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90).
Game to be played in 2 Rounds:
- Round 1: Northern Hemisphere vs Southern Hemisphere
- Round 2: East Time Zone vs West Zone
Round 1: Northern Hemisphere vs Southern Hemisphere
- The 2 teams will be standing facing each other on Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. The rules of play will be similar as Kabaddi.
- Group A players stand on the longitude points indicated the diagram (30N, 60N and 90N). One of the players of Group B comes to the center. He represents the sun.
- Upon calling out a number - 0, 30, 60 or 90, the respective pair or players chase the Sun within 15 seconds. The sun must stay between Equator and Tropic of Cancer (23.5 degrees in northern hemisphere) / Tropic of Capricorn (23.5 degrees in southern hemisphere), without getting caught by the players of the other team and dragged back beyond the Tropic of Cancer / Capricorn.
- If the Sun touches any of the players, his/her team gets the Latitude Score of the player as their score.
- If Sun is caught by the other team, the other team gets the Latitude Score of the Sun.
- The Sun goes back to his place after raiding the other side.
- This round is played till all team players get a chance or for a fixed duration of 20 minutes.
Round 2: East Time Zone vs West Time Zone
- The 2 teams will be standing facing each other on Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. The rules of play will be similar as Kabaddi.
- Group A players stand on the latitude points indicated the diagram (30N, 60N, 30S, 60S) to the right of the Prime Meridien (0 degree North-South pole).
- Group B players stand on the latitude points indicated the diagram (30N, 60N, 30S, 60S) to the left of the Prime Meridien.
- One of the players of Group B comes to the center (and stands at intersection of Equator and Prime Meridien). He represents the sun.
- Sun can move from Prime Meridien to the extreme right (for Group A) and extreme left (for Group B).
- If the Sun touches any of the players, his/her team gets the Meridien Value / Time Zone of the player as their score.
- If Sun is caught by the other team, the other team gets the Meridien Value / Time Zone of the Sun.
- The Sun goes back to his place after raiding the other side.
- This round is played till all team players get a chance or for a fixed duration of 20 minutes.
Variations
In case of more number of players, the scoring points system can be simplified by changing point system to uniform as 2 points per raid by Raiding Team and 2 points per catch/tackle for defending team.
Coaching Tips
Introduce the concepts of Longitude, Prime Meridien and Time Zone, GMT, Latitude, Temperature Zones. Also explain the rules of Kabaddi.
Equipment/Material Required
Chalk Powder to draw the globe on the ground. You may alternatively use Marker Cones to indicate the points.
