Basketball - Chest Pass with Bounce

Learning Outcomes

Develop proper technique for the chest pass with bounce in basketball.
Practice accuracy and control in throwing the chest pass with bounce.
Enhance hand-eye coordination and anticipation skills.

Description Of Activity

This lesson plan guides students through learning the chest pass with bounce, a crucial skill for navigating defenders in basketball. Through drills and playful challenges, students will master the technique, improve accuracy, and develop hand-eye coordination.

Warm-Up (5 minutes):
Play upbeat music (optional).
A light jog or jumping jacks to get the blood flowing.
Arm circles forward and backward to loosen up shoulders.
High knees and butt kicks to increase heart rate.

Station 1: Bounce & Catch:
Divide students into pairs: Each student practices with a partner.
Demonstrate the chest pass with bounce: Explain and show the hand position (thumbs behind), elbow position (tucked in), and the bounce (ball hitting the ground halfway to the target).
Partner practice: Students stand a few feet apart. One throws a chest pass with a bounce to their partner, who catches the ball at chest level. Encourage proper hand positioning for catching a bouncing ball.
Gradually increase distance: As skills improve, slowly increase the distance between partners for a greater challenge.

Station 2: Target Challenge with Bounce:
Set up target areas: Use cones or markers to create target areas at various distances.
Chest pass with bounce for points: Students take turns throwing a chest pass with bounce, aiming to hit the target areas. Award points for successful passes. Motivate them to beat their scores or their partner's scores (friendly competition!).

Station 3: Dribble, Bounce & Dish:
Partners with a ball: Students continue in pairs, with one basketball per pair.
Dribble and pass with bounce: One student dribbles the ball while their partner runs alongside. The dribbler then stops, chest passes the ball with a bounce to the running partner, who catches and repeats the drill. This combines dribbling with the chest pass with bounce.

Cool-Down:
Play calming music (optional).
Light walking or gentle stretches to cool down and prevent injury.

Remember:
This lesson plan provides a framework for developing strong chest passes with bounce skills. By incorporating fun activities, teamwork, and positive reinforcement, your students will be well on their way to becoming confident passers and better basketball players!

Variations

Younger students (Elementary):
Use brightly colored, lighter basketballs for easier throwing.
Play a passing tag game where students try to tag each other with gentle chest passes with bounce (ensure safe throws).
Older students (Middle School):
Introduce variations like bounce passes with different bounce heights for short or long passes.
Organize a short mini-scrimmage with an emphasis on using chest passes with bounce to move the ball around defenders (optional).

Coaching Tips

Focus on proper technique: Emphasize controlling the bounce height (halfway to the target) and a smooth push with the chest pass.
Break down the skill: Explain and demonstrate the chest pass with bounce step-by-step.
Offer positive reinforcement: Celebrate each student's progress, no matter their skill level.
Modify as needed: Adjust difficulty levels and drill complexity based on age and ability.
Emphasize hand-eye coordination: Encourage students to watch the ball bounce before catching.
Connect to the game: Explain how the chest passes with bounce helps beat defenders and get the ball to teammates.

Equipment/Material Required

Basketball (one per student)
Cones (optional, for marking target areas)5 cones per court to setup grid
