Activity
1.To provide the students a rigorous physical activity for 10 to 15 minutes.
2.To enable the students learn measure the distances using measuring tape.
3.To eanble students learn to use stop watch and record the timings of participants of 100m dash.
4.To enable the students compare two quantities of the same units by dividing one quantity by another quantity.
5.To eanble the students identify the terms of a ratio and notice that it is important to write the terms of the ratio in the correct order.
1.Divide the children into 5 groups each consisting of 6 to 8 students.
2.Conduct a 50m Running Race competition for each group and record the time taken by each student
to cover 50m.
3. Now, conduct 100m Running Race for each of the groups and record the time taken by each student
to cover 100m.
4.Now assemble all the children after the race and ask the students to compare the two races.
5.Children will reply that they ran 50m more in the 1st race than in the 2nd race.
6.Ask the children to express the distance ran in 1st race in terms of the 2nd race.
7.Children will immediately answer that the distance ran in the 1st race is ½ of the distance ran in the
2nd race.
8.Ask the children how did they arrive at it.
9.Children will respond that by dividing the distance ran in the first race by the distance ran in the 2nd
Race.
11. Distance ran in 1st race/ Distance ran in 2nd race = 50m/100m =1/2.
12. This way of expressing one quantity in terms of another quantity is called as ratio. We say that
The ratio of distance ran in the 1st race to distance ran in 2nd race is 1 is to 2.
13.We denote the ratio using symbol ‘:’
14.Distance ran in 1st race :Distance ran in 2nd race = 50m:100m =1:2
15.Ask the students to express the distance ran in 2nd race interms of the distance ran in 1st race.
16.Chidren express it as
Distance ran in 2nd race : Distance ran in 1st race = 100m:50m = 2 : 1.
17.Teacher should emphacize that it is very important to write the terms of the ratio in correct order.
1.Children who may not be able to run may be asked to walk.
2.We can conduct 100m dash and 200m dash instead of 50m dash and 100m dash. Here I planned for 50m and 100m dash inorder to save time.
3.The same activity can be used to teach the concept of proportion by comparing the raios of distances children ran in 1st race and 2nd race and ratios of times they have taken to complete the races.
1.The activity may take longer duration to complete, hence the teacher should arrange all the equipment needed and make the track ready well in advance.
1.Measuring tape to make race track.
2.Lime powder to mark the lanes.
3. Stop watches to record the timings.

| 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 1. LOs may be arranged in the order of academics, sports and values. 2.Time taken to cover the given distance by each team member may also be recorded for comparison. 3. variations in terms of type of movements like run/walk/jumps/hops/ skips etc. would make the activity more interesting . 4 Tabular formats may be devised for recording various academic and sports data. 5. Students be actively involved in processing, organising and analysis of data. | Rachna | delete edit |
