Activity

THROWING BALL

Class 8
Chapter:
Concept:

THROWING BALL

Learning Outcomes

1.Identify and calculate the angle of incidence and reflection of a ray of light to illustrate the laws of reflection in real life

2.Conclude the laws of reflection and represent it by drawing a ray diagram identifying incidence ray, reflected ray ,point of incidence and the normal.

3. Illustrate with a line diagram how images invert when reflecting from a mirror in order to see th applications of the laws of reflection.

4.Develop team work and coordination skill.

Description Of Activity

HOW TO PLAY  :

·  1   -   Assemble all the children of class 8 in the playground and are divided into 5 groups, each having 7 or 8 children.

·     2  -  1st group  will stand side by side in a straight line facing one side and will represent plane mirror .Each student in this group will represent as part on the reflecting surface of the mirror .

·   3 -    2nd group will represent normal at the point of incidence by facing each student of the 1st group spacing a distance of 20m or 50 m as per the availability of space in the ground .

·  4  -    Any one student form group throw a ball to any one student of the 1st group that represent point on the mirror, the student will catch the ball. Throw the ball to another student of group-4 who will represent the reflected ray.

·      5 - All the four group will remain in their position. Student of group-5 will help these students to make line when they hold a rope or red ribbon in straight representing incident ray, reflected ray and normal. They will also measure the angle of incidence and angle of reflection from the normal and keep the records.

·    6-    Each group will interchange to play the role.

CLASSROOM LEARNING :

1-Straightening of rope/red ribbon by two students at their positions represent incident ray reflected ray and normal and ball represents light .

2-Each students represents the point of each line.

3-2nd law of reflection i.e all the 3 lines are incident ray, reflected ray and normal lie in the same plane can be verified when the children hold the rope/red ribbon in different height from the ground that represent different plane and when it is drawn in the ground itself represent a plane also.

Variations

1-Size of the playground may vary depending upon facility in the school.

2-Ball, ring may be selected coloured/attractive and large size to make it interesting to catch and throw.

Coaching Tips

Students are encouraged to pace appropriately, so that they can learn the laws of reflection. When they will practice it regularly. They can apply this in other games like tennis, squash, carrom etc. This activity can be extended to share the image formation and pattern. When one student throw ball to two points (2 students ) and when two students that stand back to the mirror will move back from the mirror along the reflecting ray and where they meet is the image point .

Equipment/Material Required

·        Ball(foot ball and cricket ball / ring ) red ribbon or rope .
