Run and Learn

Class 8
Chapter:
Concept:

Run and Learn

Learning Outcomes

  1. Observe the relationship between the two quantities and finding out constant of variation.
  2. Observe the speed or strength on running track and practise for improving the speed and stamina.

Description Of Activity

How to play

  1. On the track students will improve the strength and speed using the concept of Direct and Indirect Proportion.
  2. Students will be divided in group of two as according to their choice/ capacity of running on short(with speed) or long(with strength) track.

For Group 1

  1. Say students who are good with speed and wants to run on short distance track.
  2. Group will be further divided in two. One group will run and other will note down their time.
  3. Activity:- On 100 meter track
  4. One group will run and time will be noted by other group.
  5. If speed is more ==> time taken will be less, and hence they are inversely proportional  (s) is inversely proportional to and their product is constant known as constant of variation is distance s*t=d
  6. This will help students to calculate their speed which helps them to improve their performance by covering same distance in less time.

For Group 2

  1. Say for students who are interested in long distance running and want to increase the stamina.
  2. The group is further divided in two, one group will run and other will note down the distance covered.
  3. Activity:- Timer is set for 15 min say, and one group is asked to cover the maximum distance or number of rounds on 200 meter/400 meter track, other will note down the distance covered.
  4. more speed ==> more distance traveled   hence they are directly proportional to each other

 (d) is directly proportional to s  and their ration is fixed known as proportionality constant is time d/s = t

This will help students to improve their stamina for running or jogging for long time and simultaneously working on speed without getting exhausted.

Variations

We can do the same activity with some hurdles or doing three leg race  keeping distance fixed or time fixed at a time.

Coaching Tips

  1. Before the activity performance students must be acquainted with unit conversion in time and distance, decimal and speed-distance-time relation.
  2. Students must have glucose water or some choclates with them for sudden energy, and must run according to their capacity.

Equipment/Material Required

Stop watch,Measuring tape,Chairs/benches for hurdles

Students be involved in the process of collection, organising and analysis of data to achieve the LOs. Rachna delete edit
