REGULAR AND DIFFUSED REFLECTION BY THROW BALL ACTIVITY

Class 8
Chapter:
Concept:

REGULAR AND DIFFUSED REFLECTION BY THROW BALL ACTIVITY

Learning Outcomes

1-Distinguish between reflection from a rough and smooth reflecting surface in order to differentiate between diffused and regular reflection.

2-Appreciate that the laws of reflection is applicable for both type of reflection.

3-Develop team work (collaboration) and communication skill.

Description Of Activity

HOW TO PLAY :

1-Assemble all the 40 children of the class in the playground and divide them into two groups each consists of 20 children.

2-One group will play for regular reflection and the other for diffused reflection.

3-Each group again divided into four subgroups consisting of five children .

4-Out of four sub groups in each  group, 1st group of 5 students represent smooth reflecting surface (by standing side by side and facing in one direction).2nd group of 5 students each stand facing to 1st group that represent normal .

5-The other two subgroups will act as incident ray and reflected ray by throwing and catching the ball by the students and the other student in this group will assist them to hold the rope/ribbon that represent the line indicating incident ray, normal and the reflected ray.

6-The other 2nd main group will also do the same procedure as above but difference is that the 1st sub groups of 5 students will represent rough surface when they stand side by side but their face in different direction .

7-Each group will interchange to play this role .

CLASSROOM LEARNING :

After playing throw ball, the students in each group hold the rope /red ribbon that represents incident ray, normal and reflected ray. They observe that in regular reflection all the reflected ray are parallel to each other while in diffused reflection the reflected ray are not parallel to each even both follows the laws of reflection.

Variations

1-Size of the play ground may vary depending upon the facility available in the school.

2-4 groups may be divided based on 4 house colour like blue, green, red and yellow to make attractive .

Coaching Tips

1-Students are encouraged to pace appropriately to learn regular and diffused reflection.

2-They should practice regularly.

Equipment/Material Required

Ball , rope and red ribbon.
