Representation Of Integers On Number Line

Learning Outcomes

  1. Drawing a straight number line with white lime and writing integers from -10 to 10 with equal interval.
  2. Moving to left of zero for representation of a negative integer.
  3. Moving to right of zero for representation of a positive integer.
  4. Performing mental calculation correctly while involving in game.
  5. Develop awareness of speed & distance while running.

Description Of Activity

How to Play

  1. Students will be divided into 4 teams A,B,C and D.Now each team will have 10 students. They will learn how to represent integers on given no. line using a running activity.
  2. Each teams will ask to make a similar no. line on ground(-10 to 10) using white lime with equal intervals.
  3. All 4 teams will send one team member who stand on mark O on their no. line with any object.
  4. Now, each team member will be given one integer which is to be represent on no. line by putting that object on given number.
  5. Team member will have to put the given object on that no. and then return back to the initial position (Mark O) as soon as possible.
  6. Integers which are to be represented on number line will be written in some simple mathematical operation. For example (a)To represent -4 we can say that 36/9 to the left of zero.(b)To represent 9 we can say that 63/7 to the right of zero.(c)To represent -7 we can say that 35/5 to the left of zero.We can make 10 integers in this form which are to be represent on number line.
  7. Time taken by each team member will be noted to see who can do this as fast as possible. Marks for fastest will be 4,2nd position will be 3, 3rd position will be 2 and last position will be 1.No marks will be awarded for representing wrong integers.
  8. All team will have to represent 10 integers so that each member will get the chance to play this running game.
  9. At last score will be calculated to decide the winning team.

Variations

  1. Children can do the same activity using brisk walking.
  2. The same activity can be done with frog jumps, sack race, long jump instead of running.
  3. More mathematical operation like decimal, fraction etc can be used to give the integers for representation.

Coaching Tips

  1. The children are encouraged to play the game safely and enjoy the activity.
  2. The teacher must check that all the team number line must be similar and equal.
  3. Children are made to note the time accurately and honestly and encouraged to maintain team spirit.
