Crossing The Hurdles

Learning Outcomes

  1. Define units of length, capacity and weight.
  2. Convert units
  3. Perform arithmetic calculations.
  4. Solve application problems involving units of length/ capacity/ weight.
  5. Develop conversion skills.

Description Of Activity

How to Play

  1. Place 7 hurdles (with age appropriate heights) each marked with KILO-HECTOR-DECA-STANDARD UNITS OF LENGTH/CAPACITY/WEIGHT ( m/l/g )- DECI-CENTS-MILL { in this order only }
  2. Mark starting point beside KILO and ending point after MILLS.
  3. Divide the class in two groups namely A and B.
  4. Now, group A students will be assigned the number of hurdles they need to cross. One student comes and start from starting point and crosses 5 hurdles by jumping. And he reaches from KILO to CENTS. Each hurdle is 10 times. So, 1 kilometre = 100,000 cm ( say for metric units) { 5 HURDLES MEANS 5 ZEROES IN THE RELATION}
  5. Similarly, other students of Group A will perform various conversion using forward movement.
  6. Now, the students of Group B will start crossing the hurdles but in a different way. They will cross hurdles from the ending point by jumping on one leg only. ( Adjust the height of the hurdle as per requirement )
  7. For backward movement, each hurdle is 1/10th. Let say, a student of Group B starts from DECI and reaches HECTOR by crossing 3 hurdles on one leg. So, 1 decimetre = 1/1000 hectometre.( say for metric conversion)
  8. Similarly, all the students can be called for the activity and different conversion can be done for capacity and weight also.

Variations

  1. Instead of hurdles, hula hoops can be taken.
  2. A pitch can also be made instead of the hurdles and jumping can be done from one column to another.

Coaching Tips

Teacher should be alert all the time to ensure safety of students.

Equipment/Material Required

Hurdles and some flags to mark the units on each hurdle.

LOs related to sports and values associated with the activity be stated. 2.A layout plan in diagrammatic form may be presented for convenience of the users. 3.The activity can be planned for execution in two phases. One to acquaint the students with the academic and sports skills of the activity and second by organising team competitions. 4.Tabular formats be devised for recording of academic and sports related data of each participating individual and team of the activity in each phase. 5. Analysis of the data may be done by involving students in organising the data appropriately. Rachna delete edit
