Learning Outcomes
- The children will learn how to use and read a laboratory thermometer.
- They will learn the boiling and freezing point of water.
Description Of Activity
How to play
- One straight line is marked on the field with markings starting from -100C to1100 C. A badminton racket can be used to mark the distance between two children for every 10 units.
- A group of 13 children wearing white T shirts are made to stand on the points marked on the line from -100C to 1100C denoting the laboratory thermometer.
- Three children wearing grey T shirts are made to stand before the starting point i.e.-100C and act as the bulb of the thermometer.
- A child named Varun, wearing a black T shirt stands near the straight line and acts as a pointer/marker of mercury rising up or falling down.
- Two separate groups A and B of 5 children each with ICE and BOILING/HOT WATER written on the back of their T shirts respectively are marked.
- When group A (ICE) holding their hands encircle the bulb of the thermometer, Varun runs and taps the child at 00C, freezing point of water.
- Again when group B (BOILING WATER) holding their hands encircle the bulb of the thermometer, Varun runs and taps the child at 1000C, boiling point of water.
- Other children in the class are made to note down the observations in a tabular form.
Variations
- Colored balls can be used in place of children. Children can aim and throw the marker ball (mercury) at the marked points denoting the temperature.
- It can also be tried using carom board dices of different colors .
- It can also be played in billiards.
- Children aim at the dice for different temperature.
- Same concept can be used to explain clinical thermometer.
Coaching Tips
- The children are encouraged to play safely and under the supervision of teachers.
- They are made to note the temperature accurately and honestly.
- They are encouraged to enjoy the game and also learn the concept in true sportsman spirit.
